Cryoarchiving presents the opportunity to substantially reduce the number of mice used to both store and re-establish a mouse line. It provides the researcher with a cost saving alternative to breeding rarely used lines, provides a backup of valuable mouse lines, can be recovered into a SPF (specific pathogen free) barrier facility, and facilitates the distribution of strains to collaborators.
The Mouse Biology Program (MBP) will gladly store samples cryopreserved in house. We maintain a split archive of frozen embryos and sperm held in liquid nitrogen tanks. All liquid nitrogen tanks are attached to bulk nitrogen source tanks with automated filling systems. In addition, a continuous alarm monitoring system will alert facility personnel for temperature or liquid nitrogen levels outside the stipulated range.
Containers used for shipping cryopreserved embryos and sperm are tested routinely using a thermo-coupler to assure they maintain proper temperature.
